  1. We need assessments and regulation.

  2. The lesson base is excellent. The difficulty comes in modifications to meet different developmental levels, especially below grade 10.

  3. I enjoyed this lesson, especially the blog style conversation. The students would really enjoy seeing each others comments. The problem is, how do we get the students onto a blogging site? I think once we have more freedom with technology common core won't seem so scary. Great lesson!

  4. The practice is great for learners like me. Without a classroom set of computers this will be less effective for me. We can go to the lab, but that takes valuable time going to and from, setting up, getting everyone logged in, etc. We had log in problems during the lesson and I am sure a classroom full of kiddos would have some problems as well.

Technical issues aside, this is a great way to incorporate reading, writing and technology and I will strive to use this. It is robust, relevant and real world. :)

  5. The articles were very interesting. They could stir up some interesting conversation in the classroom.

  6. articles need to be grade level appropriate I would put students into small groups just not partners. depending on the article on how much background knowledge the kids would need.

  7. I already use current event articles in my classroom, but I use 3 column notes to assist my students in note taking. Common Core Standard 2 asks students to summarize, and I feel the 2 column notes actually left this step out. When using multiple sources, having accurate summaries is vital. Using texts concerning two opposing sides of any issue gives students an opportunity to assess the issue in a much broader/deeper manner, and it forces them draw their own conclusions, becomming critical thinkers.

  8. Reflections....
I have enjoyed this day; so-called professional development is unpredictable as to its value and applicability to my teaching assignment, but today was useful and fun.
I was seated randomly, but my neighbors were good people to work with.
I will need to invest some of my own time to investigate some of these Internet-based tools, such as wikispaces to create a class website, or glogster, wordle, slideshare, and animoto for how my students and I may be able to employ them.
I also must spend significant time reading and thinking about the Common Core Standards. I have attended a couple of presentations about them, but I have neither read nor studied them closely, so I do not know how my work will be affected. I eagerly await the day when No Child Left Behind will be a thing of the past. I do believe that helping my students understand and use Internet based programs is certainly more relevant and possibly more helpful to them than more traditional teaching methods....

  9. What worked well?
I liked that we (students) had to read the article and find quotes throughout the article that intrigued them. In addition, I liked that we (students) got to respond to the quote. I believe this really helped understand the text and make a connection.

What strategies from the lesson could you use in your own classroom?
I could use the whole lesson in my classroom, provided I had appropriate reading level materials.

What texts might you use with this lesson?
I think you could use this with any text. I think using this with weekly reader would really intrigue the students, and perhaps get them more involved in doing further research on subject matter.

  10. I haven't used articles as much as I would like to in my classroom, so I think this lesson is a good one to use with my kids for starting out.

I think I would have to put more guidelines on what kinds of notes or how many points/quotes they need to have because of their tendencies to give less.

Standard 2 would definitely be addressed with the students identifying main ideas and themes, as well as tying them together.

Standard 4 could also be addressed (meaning of words and phrases), especially depending on what kind of article was chosen.

I really like the idea of using articles about current events. There was also a suggested book in "Recommended Reading" called 'Texts and Lessons for Content-Area Reading' with a lot of articles that might grab the attention of the students more.

  12. *What worked well? The hands on activities really help with learning how to use the different tools.

*What strategies from the lesson could you use in your own classroom? I would use wikis and blogs for class discussions. I also like the idea of having students create power points.

*How might you modify the lesson to fit your students' needs? More or less instruction and assistance for the technology as needed, more explanation of how to take notes and make inferences, different levels of articles on the same subjects to match the reading levels of the students.

*What texts might you use with this lesson? It depends on the students.

  13. Wonderful Lesson! I will use this idea if technology is available on a regular basis for each of my students. I think I would need to be sure the reading assignment is the level my students can be successful at reading. This is great!

  14. I learned a lot. I really enjoyed the lesson, but I still had a lot of unanswered questions. We need handouts on how to manage the technology so we can get it rolling in our classroom.

  15. Model lesson was excellent. Our students are not always able to get to computers. We could blog by doing a pass around. Or posting blogs on an interactive bulletin board that could be seen by more than one grade level.
