  1. I'm excited about the new standards; they make sense. I hadn't expected that. When I did Lit. Lab training a few years back, a lot of the material about reading in content area was presented there. It is good that we are moving in the same direction. I'm taking almost all my hours in technology this summer. I am going to set a goal of a task per quarter per class.

  2. I have had many aha moments in the past two days. Before this training, I really had no concept or idea what Common Core was or how to even begin to implement it into my classroom. I now have a much better understanding of how to incorporate reading and writing into my social studies content lessons on a daily basis. I would like to learn more about different strategies to use in the classroom.
    I plan to immediately implement the daily use of the Common Core standards in the classroom by addressing at least one of them each lesson if possible. I will then continue to use them in different ways throughout the school year.

  3. -The understanding of the standards by “unpacking them.”
    -How are these CCSS going to affect the frameworks used with the Library Media?
    -The use of more technology use by the students where they select the type of program to use.

  4. Aha #1 - I can see myself incorporating more technology like I want to according to CCR standards.
    Aha #2 - Unpacking the standards isn't as hard as I thought.
    Aha #3 - Performance items can be easily added to lesson plans - the initial planning will be time consuming.

    I need more time and modeling opportunities to feel confident in constructing my lesson plans.

    I will be implementing a class blog!

  5. I like the idea of real world situations to help students learn and think. It makes sense because students will need these skills to function in everyday life. To be able to learn these skills helps them become better citizens and contributors to society. It also helps them have better lives for themselves.
    Teach them skills don't feed them and then they can think on their own.

  6. I've had several aha moments. First and foremost, I now understand what the common core is, and - as a result - an idea of what is expected of me. Secondly. I appreciate the emphasis on the task and the task as it corresponds to the core standard. Thirdly, I can really see the need for some careful and thorough scaffolding to guide the students up to standard.

  7. AHA MOMENT--using a blog in the classroom. I plan on creating one for my classroom.
    CONFUSING--Until Common Core initiators/creators finalize exactly what will be used in schools and how they will be used, it will be a challenge for teachers and administrators to totally implement them as effectively as I hope they can be.
    Use IMMEDIATELY--the lesson I created using CCSS. I feel I have a head start on my lesson plans. Also, as we went through these past two days, I have made many notes with good ideas that I plan to implement in my classes. I feel I have a much better understanding of CCSS's and will utilize the CC language when I create my rubrics and lesson plans. Thank you!!

  8. The importance of allowing students to talk prior to writing was a concept I had not previously given much attention to. It makes sense, however, that students can more readily get their ideas flowing when they are engaged in conversation with a classmate.
    I plan to implement PEE and turn & talk as soon as school begins.

Some ahas I have had are: that it is easier to write a performance task than I thought, that blogging is actually a good tool for reading and writing, and how easy it is to find things you need on the internet. Remembering to do the different ideas presented will be hard for me. One thing I would like to plan to do immediately is showing the students how to unpack the tasks.

  12. Creating performance tasks by combining my content frameworks and the CCSS helps me determine how to approach the content (ie, what texts and activities to include). What remains difficult for me is that I lack familiarity with technology to the point that I'm afraid I'd ride the same three or four horses throughout the semester. Also, assessing thinking more effectively would eliminate those moments when I've had to give a high score to a student who didn't stretch to high levels of thinking, while I knew the reason that student got an undeserved score was because I had written too easy a rubric. How do we design rubrics more effectively, then?

  13. Overall, the common core is about thinking deeper, not wider. As I ponder how I need to plan to assist my students with the standards, I understand that I need to use the terminology from the common core standards in a precise manner. I must allow my students to truly "do the work" so that they are thinking at a higher level and developing the skills necessary to be successful in college and a career. I plan to provide my students with more opportunities to take the information in and then "teach" it to the class instead of me "feeding it" to them. Students must experience to learn, not just recite. Additionally, the common core REQUIRES the use of technology for performance tasks...I will plan and prepare more thoroughly for this aspect.

  14. Aha MOMENT: I am more comfortable with my (still limited) knowledge of the CCS than a number of my fellow educators, for which I can thank my school district.
    NEW FOR ME: I LOVE Wing Clips. There is no limit to how these can be used in the classroom.
    CONFUSED: I shall continue to search for ways in which I can support my fellow educators as we approach CC.
    EPIPHANY: Common Core is not new. Instead, I believe we are returning to a level of expectation for student achievement which was once universally accepted.

  15. It is not additional frameworks to teach. It is new ways to teach them. I need help with the technology part of common core. I am going to start with reading standard 1. Feeling a little better about common core and knowing that I can slowly phase it in over the next three years.

  16. Aha! Some of what I am already doing fits into common core...just need to turn it up a notch or two..go into higher level reading levels.
    Need more help on technology proficiency.
    Project based learning that incorporates a higher level reading piece into the project...even if it is only a portion of a piece of literature.

  18. Common Core lends itself to, and somewhat forces, cross curriculum cooperation and alignment.

    Personally, I question how we are to successfully multitask, model, instruct, and document these standards with quality and full connection (for ourselves and students).

    I will be exploring wiki spaces, and google applications to integrate technology into my classes, as well as, incorporating and documenting some Common Core Standards in my lesson plans.
